People in Their 40s Tend to Sleep the Least: These Tips Can Help

Many experts have said the same thing if you are in your 40s and feel like you don’t get much sleep. It’s most likely there are several factors about this time in your life that could reduce the amount of rest you are able to get through this period.

Experts tend to believe that this can come from issues like increased family and work responsibilities during these years. Other stresses during this time could play a role in the challenge in sleeping well, like financial stress and other overall responsibilities that were not an issue earlier in life. For this reason, it can help to take specific steps to set up a reliable and steady sleep cycle and follow it daily.

  • Exercise routinely to help get better overnight rest. The most recommended workout routine tends to be five days a week to set your body up on a solid cycle.
  • Be sure to eat your meals at reasonable times. This can include not eating too close to your bedtime at night while also staying away from heavy dinners, caffeine, and nicotine when close to bedtime.
  • When setting yourself up for bed, set up a sort of “breeze down” schedule that can help you settle in for the night. Some things that may help include a warm shower, tea, soft or delicate music, or reading a book. It could take a little time to determine what works best for you, so try some different things and then follow your schedule regularly to help with better sleep.
  • Try to get away from your electronic devices about an hour before bedtime to give your eyes a rest from that light. And set yourself up for bed and doze in a peaceful, cool, and dim environment. With all of these, you may try to set up your bedroom to be a comfortable sleeping environment.

The 40s are likely the busiest period of your life. It can make it harder to turn off your mind and body at night and wind down to sleep. Even more, it’s a time when it is helpful to try and get about 9 hours of rest daily, as it is good to start setting your body up for improved wellness as you move into the next middle-aged stage of life.
